The word Shaila means mountain and Putri means daughter. After ending her life with self-immolation in her previous birth as Sati and consort of Lord Shiva due to the insult her past father Daksha Prajapati meted out to her and Lord Shiva, she took birth as Parvati. Parvata in Sanskrit and some local languages in India means mountain. She was born as the daughter of Mount Himalaya, the king of mountains and hence named as Parvati or Shailaputri.
She is worshipped on the first day of the Navaratri. She is depicted with two hands and a crescent moon on the forehead. She wears a trident in the right hand and a lotus flower in the left hand. Bull is her vehicle.
wishes you a Blessed Navratri.
